Mahan Airlines announced on Wednesday that starting next week the company will operate Tehran- Saint Petersburg direct flights. In recent years, the number of Iranian tourists visiting Russian cities, especially Saint Petersburg, has been increased significantly.

“In order to serve Iranian and Russian passengers, Mahan Airlines will operate Tehran- Saint Petersburg direct flights. Modern aircrafts will transfer passengers between the two cities every 15 days.” A statement by Mahan read. Iranian Airline is expected to increase the number of flights in coming months.

Officials of Saint Petersburg Municipality have praised Mahan Airlines for offering this service to passengers. Accordingly, Russians believe that Tehran- Saint Petersburg direct flights will increase the number of tourists.

Ali Khaledi, a tour operator based in Tehran, says this measure will cut prices for Iranian tourists. “Iranian passengers used to take indirect flights through Moscow to Saint Petersburg. The route was too costly, but the new direct flights will reduce the involved expenses dramatically.”

“I think more Iranians will visit Saint Petersburg, if tours’ prices slash due to the operation of Tehran- Saint Petersburg flights.” Ali Khaledi added.

Saint Petersburg has significant historical and cultural heritage and is thus considered a highly attractive tourist destination. The 18th and 19th century architectural ensemble of the city and its environs is preserved in virtually unchanged form.

Earlier this month, Mahan Airlines started operating Tehran-Moscow direct flights, which drew the attention of Russian passengers.
