Grand Ayatollah Dastgheib Shirazi Calls for Immediate Release of Karroubi and Mousavi

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Mohammad Dastgheib Shirazi

In recent months, many reformist and politicians have called for immediate release of Iranian political prisoners. Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi, leaders of the opposition in the post-election unrest, are currently under house arrests.

Before winning Iran’s 2013 presidential election, Hassan Rouhani promised to do everything he can to release political prisoners. He was also requested to end the house arrests of Mirhossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi and Zahra Rahnavard. Subsequently Iran’s reformist political parties under the influence of Mohammad Khatami offered their sincere supports to Rouhani.

Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Mohammad Dastgheib Shirazi says officials of the Iranian government should honor their promises by releasing the political prisoners. He also called on influential politicians to use their power in this regard.

Addressing a group of people in the holy city of Qom, Ayatollah Dastgheib Shirazi said: “There are many influential figures in Iran who can change the conditions by giving constructive instructions. I kindly urge them to support the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in releasing the innocent political prisoners.”

Ayatollah Dastgheib Shirazi, a member of the Assembly of Experts, has repeatedly criticized officials of the Iranian government and intelligence service for putting Mousavi, Karoubi and Rahnavard under illegitimate house arrests.

Mousavi and Karoubi have already refused to express their repentance for leading the Green Movement in Iran.

On the other hand, Members of Parliament have asked the Judiciary service to penalize political prisoners according to Islam Sharia and country’s civil code. Mousavi and Karoubi are accused of plotting against the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and Islamic Republic of Iran.

The 2009–10 Iranian election protests were a series of protests following the 2009 Iranian presidential election against the disputed victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

At the same time, Iran’s Deputy Police Chief Ahmad Reza Radan found Western governments guilty of supporting the so-called ‘velvet’ revolution in the country.
