Esteghlal and Persepolis to Face Off in the 77th Tehran Derby

Esteghlal Persepolis Tehran Derby 77

The Tehran-based football clubs, Esteghlal and Persepolis, are ready to face off in the 77th Tehran derby. ‘Seven’ is a popular number among the Esteghlal fans, because the captain Farhad Majidi wears the number 7 shirt and he is extremely popular in the country. However, Ghalenoei will not include him in the starting line-up.

Last week, Persepolis managed to defeat Foolad Khoozestan at home by scoring three goals. Analysts believe that the recent win will help Persepolis to play a better game in the Tehran derby.

At the same time, Esteghlal defeated by Esteghlal Khuzestan in Ahwaz. The Tehrani players failed to come back against their opponent. Amir Ghalenoei, the head coach of Esteghlal, declared his unhappiness with the result, but he said that the Esteghlal players will give their best services in the coming derby.

Over the past two years and half, Persepolis has won Tehran derby once in 02-02-2012. In that game Eamon Zayed scored three goals for his side, and Persepolis won the match after four consecutive failures against its arch-rival, Esteghlal.

It is worth mentioning that Tehran derby is widely considered the major cross-town derbies in Iranian league, and also in the world. This match was declared as the most important derby in Asia and 22nd most important derby in the world in June 2008 by World Soccer magazine.

80,000 to 100,000 fans usually flock to Azadi Stadium in order to watch the game. Iranian television broadcaster IRIB airs the game via Channel 3 and Jam-e-Jam.
